Background to the discussion

Myocardial infarction (MI) occurs in 1 in 30 patients after non-cardiac surgery. This can lead to further morbidity and mortality. Historically beta-blockade around the time of surgery was thought to help prevent MI, but the results of clinical trials were conflicting. The POISE trial examined whether perioperative beta-blockade could prevent myocardial infarction or death in over 8000 patients from 190 hospitals in 23 countries.
