New NIHR Global Health Research opportunities

NIHR Global Health Research

The NIHR is inviting UK-based universities and research institutes to submit applications to deliver applied global health research. £60 million will be available for successful universities and research institutes looking to expand their existing global health work or for new entrants to the field.

Applications will be invited for institutions to establish National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Global Health Research Units and Groups which can deliver measurable benefits to patients and the public in low and middle income countries (LMICs).

There is a particular interest in funding applications that address under-funded or under-researched areas in any areas of infectious and non-communicable disease. Applied research into antimicrobial resistance is also eligible. Particular non-communicable health areas of interest include mental health, surgery, and tobacco control, road safety as well as health and applied social science and economic research. However, the call is broad and is not restricted to these areas. Applications in any given specialty can be incorporated as part of a broader scheme of work or be standalone specialisms.

This call will complement UK funded work already supported by the Department for International Development (DFID) in developing countries, by the Medical Research Council (MRC), and schemes NIHR co-funds such as the Joint Global Health Trials Scheme. This call is also complementary to the current Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) RCUK call for strategic programmes to grow research capability to meet the challenges faced by developing countries. RCUK and NIHR will share information on health-related funding and will coordinate.

Who can apply?

UK universities and research institutes which meet the following criteria are invited to apply:

  • NIHR Global Health Research Units: Universities and Research Institutes with an existing track record of delivering internationally recognised research who wish to consolidate and expand this work, and
  • NIHR Global Health Research Groups: Existing specialist academic groups who wish to expand into the field of global health, especially in shortage areas of research.

How much funding is available?

Funding of up to £7 million is available for established institutions with an existing track record of delivering internationally recognised research. Existing specialist academic units who wish to expand into the field of global health can apply for awards of up to £2 million.
